Separate bed process:
- Provided pressure vessels have cation resins and anion resins
- During processing water passes through the cation bed
- Positive ions like sodium (Na ), calcium (Ca 2)
- Magnesium (Mg 2) are exchanged for hydrogen (H ) ions
- Then water passes to the anion bed
- Same process removes negative ions like chloride (Call-)
- Sulfate (SO4-2), and bicarbonate (HCO3-)
- Replacing them with hydroxyl (OH-)
- Further, with the combination of hydrogen and hydroxyl ions pure water is produced
Mixed bed process:
- Mixed bed is also referred as a polisher
- Both cation and anion resins are provided into same pressure vessels
