The reciprocating pistons should be made up of stainless steel and reciprocate should be special self-lubricated linear bearings. The eccentric cam, which drives the twin piston, should be made up of bearing steel and drive should be given to the pistons via a needle bearing. The piston rod should be further fitted with a hardened thrust button which comes in contact with the needle bearing thus ensuring minimum wear of the thrust button. The piston held in the cylinder with the help of a special piston ring, which should avoid metal-to-metal contact of the piston with the cylinder. The cylinder and priming valve housing should be made up of gunmetal.
Note : In new priming system there should not be any clutch dome assembly, crank shaft, connecting rod, worm gear, manual operated engage disengage lever like conventional reciprocating priming system and should be fully automatic.
Working Of Priming System:
The advanced reciprocating priming system, should engage & disengage automatically thus simplifying pump operation to a minimum. The priming system should be controlled by the water pressure of the pump only and does not need any auxiliary fluids. There should not be any rotating parts. The priming should be highly reliable and wear & tear should be reduced to almost nil. The automatic primer should primes even at low engine speeds, giving more rapid priming than any other conventional priming system. The priming system should be fitted in pump bearing housing, should consist of one eccentric cam, two stainless steel short stroke dry-piston.
The Eccentric cam should be fitted on pump main shaft & through this cam the primer pistons are operated. The eccentric cam for driving pistons should be made of bearing steel & the same should be in oil bathed which should give lifetime service for Fire Pump, Coil springs positioned inside force the pistons towards the surface of the eccentric cam on the main drive shaft. As soon as the pump is engaged, the eccentric starts to rotate thus alternately forcing the pistons outwards by overriding the spring load.
During each outward stroke of piston air should be drawn from the pump housing & from the connected suction line. The automatic priming process should continues until adequate vacuum is reached allowing the atmospheric pressure to lift water to the pump level.
As soon as the water enters the pump housing the water pressure overrides the spring load thus permanently forcing the pistons into the stand by condition. Under stand by condition the eccentric rotates unemployed. Any drop in water pressure reactivates the priming process automatically.
