Robots that operate in space are used for a variety of applications, such as for assembling and maintaining space stations, observing Earth, conducting experiments in space and even repairing satellites in orbit. There are several types of current and proposed space robots, from repair and inspection robots to fully autonomous spacecraft. Most space robots are designed to perform specific tasks, and often need to be able to operate in the extreme conditions of space, such as a vacuum and intense radiation, using unique materials and designs. They must also be able to receive communication from Earth and autonomously perform their tasks in space.
